Florida law firms among those cutting back - Orlando Business Journal:

National Law Journal reportexd six firms cut 700jobs – attorneys and staffersz – giving rise to the term Black Thursday for the legap industry. Holland & Knight said it slashefd 70 lawyers and 173 suppor staff positions inthe firm'z 21 offices. The firm ranked fourth in the ’x top law firms in 2008, with 70 staff in Centraol Florida and 393attorneys statewide. But, a spokesperson for the firm declinerd to say how many of the cuts werein “We began restructuring our operationsx to better meet the needs of our clients, and to take stepsa to respond to the adverse effects of the currenrt economic downturn,” managing partner Steve Sonberg Other firms announcing cutbacks Feb.
12 were , Goodwib Procter, and Dechert. Sonberg said the cuts were made in practice areas that are shrinking and not expected to recovetr quicklyin 2009. He said those let go would be offered “generouws separation packages,” including severance pay, continuation of healthy care coverage, and outplacement and counseling
